WASHINGTON – Southwest Missouri Congressman Roy Blunt (Mo.) issued the following statement this evening after the House rejected a Democratic plan to immediately surrender our mission in Iraq, but later passed a bill rationing funds and equipment for our troops for the next two months:
“We had hoped the president’s veto of the Democrats’ first withdrawal plan would encourage the majority to set aside the political theatre and work with Republicans to provide a clean bill of funds for our troops. But, 94 days after this war funding discussion began, the performance on the House floor continues, and we’re still not close to providing our troops with what they need to do the job we’ve asked them to do.
“Now on their second try, we had hoped Democrats would offer a plan to get us closer to that important goal. Instead, one of the bills we saw tonight called for a near-immediate surrender of our mission in Iraq, and the other sought to put off that surrender by 60 days while Democrats decide if our troops and our mission are worth funding in the future. It’s hard to believe, but the second act is more disturbing and dangerous than the first.
“As the majority continues their charade, knowing that this misguided plan will never become law, I hope at some point they take a moment to listen to Gen. Petraeus and Sec. Gates – whose only motivation is to ensure our men and women in harm’s way are safe, secure and successful.”
